PMD Personal Microderm Classic – Advanced Skin Treatment at Home

pmd microdermabrasion

The ability to perform microdermabrasion at home has really started a skincare revolution. Until just a few years ago, this technology could only be found in professional clinics at eye wateringly expensive rates. Now however, you can get similar results in the comfort of your home with a device that fits into the palm of your hand.

The PMD Personal Microderm Classic does exactly that. It’s slim, tubular design makes for excellent hand-held maneuverability, and it’s light enough that your arms won’t ache after a full microdermabrasion session.

Besides that, it’s niftier than many microdermabrasion devices, some of which could better be described as machines due to their size and computer-like control boxes.

Although at-home devices make microdermabrasion much more affordable than professional treatments, they’re not cheap. You can expect to pay in the region of $100 to $200 for a decent one.

So, when there are lots of other ways to exfoliate and pamper your skin, why invest in a product like the PMD Personal Microderm?

Benefits of Using the PMD Microderm Classic

The top 5 benefits of this handy device include:

  1. Smoother, brighter, softer skin with a more even tone
  2. Active treatment of signs of ageing such as wrinkles, age spots, sun damage, and pigmentation
  3. Treatment of spots, blemishes, and acne scars
  4. Reduction in pore size (a feat very difficult to achieve with topical products)
  5. Better absorption and boosted effectiveness of skin care products like moisturisers, cleansers, oils, and serums.

Essentially, microdermabrasion provides a level of exfoliation that cream exfoliators, loofahs, retinoids and AHAs can’t. It’s designed to be used not in place of a skincare routine, but in tandem with it. It enables topical products to get directly into the skin and therefore do their jobs much better.

How Does the PMD Classic Device Work?

Microdermabrasion is a two-step process.

Firstly, the rotating tips coated with aluminium oxide crystals work to gently abrase the top layer of your skin. This buffs and polishes away dead skin cells that are restricting your skin’s glow, revealing a new, shiny complexion underneath. The gentle abrasion encourages the production of new, healthy skin cells. This is why microdermabrasion should be conducted repeatedly over a period of time for the best results.

The second function of the Microderm Classic is the vacuum suction. The way this part works is also twofold.

  1. It clears your skin of the exfoliated dead cells
  2. It gently pulls blood to the surface of your skin, increasing circulation and triggering the skin’s natural healing process. This in turn boosts collagen and elastin production, for younger, healthier looking skin with more volume and ‘bounce’.

What’s To Like About PMD for Home Microdermabrasion

To understand how the PMD Personal Microderm Classic sets itself apart from competing products, let’s take a look at what you get for the price:

  • The PMD Personal Microderm device itself
  • Power adapter for charging
  • Facial cap
  • Body cap (for use on larger areas)
  • Ultra Sensitive Training Disc
  • 2 x Sensitive Discs
  • 2 x Very Sensitive Discs
  • 2 x Moderate Discs
  • Reusable filter

This variety of caps and filters that the PMD device provides is not all that common in the at-home microdermabrasion market. Many are just designed for facial use.

The PMD however, allows you to target bigger problem areas like the neck and chest. These areas can be prone to just as much wrinkling and sun damage as the face. The ability to target both areas provides a complete experience for full-body youthfulness and glow.

The broad range of discs is also much more generous than many other devices on the market. If you’re brand new to microdermabrasion, you can start with the training discs, building up to the ‘very sensitive’ and finally, the ‘sensitive’. This is also a big plus for those with easily irritated skin.

Cons of PMD Microderm

The PMD has proved an effective and popular at-home microdermabrasion device. The only downside some have encountered is a shorter lifespan than expected.

Because the device is so light and relatively small compared to others, the vacuum suction isn’t the most durable. Some have found that the suction goes after around a year of use. If you’re only using it 3-4 times a month, it’s less likely you’ll encounter this problem. Even if you do, the one-off cost of the device for the year still works out much cheaper than a year’s worth of salon or clinic appointments.

Secondly, the PMD Classic only has one setting, whereas some devices have two or three. You might consider this a downside if you prefer to choose or vary your speed.

However, because of the variety of discs the PMD provides, you can still choose how abrasive you want your treatment to be according to your skin type and irritation tolerance. This is arguably more important than being able to choose your speed, because it will have the highest impact on the harshness of the treatment.

If you prefer to be able to choose your rotation speed, PMD does offer a ‘Pro’ version, which has two speed settings, and the ‘Elite’ which offers three.

Is the PMD Personal Microderm Classic Worth the Money?

This is an extremely easy and simple to use device that doesn’t require previous experience. For starters, make sure you read the instructions carefully, don’t go over the same patch of skin twice, and don’t exceed once-weekly use, at least in the beginning.

Some people find that they struggle with more complex or heavy duty machines. It can be intimidating to use something abrasive when it’s not clear how it works. Equally, too many modes or settings to choose from is also off-putting. There’s no risk of that with the PMD Classic device – you just attach the disc, turn it on and go.

It’s a great product for getting started in the world of microdermabrasion with, and it caters for even the most sensitive of skin types.
